HENKEL and CAPSA FOOD reduce emissions and empty kilometres thanks to collaborative transport solutions from CHEP

CHEP, a specialist supply chain solutions company, has demonstrated its commitment to reducing carbon emissions by orchestrating a collaborative transport project between the leading chemical and consumer products company, Henkel, and CAPSA FOOD, the leading company in the dairy sector in the Spanish market.

The project is part of CHEP’s Collaborative Transport Solutions, a logistics optimisation programme that has been made possible thanks to the combination of the company’s unique visibility over millions of customer movements, with the power of Big Data to identify synergies and opportunities to share transport among customers and with CHEP. The programme has been in operation for six years and there are already more than 220 CHEP partners benefiting from it across Europe.

In this case, transport is shared using a ‘duo-trailer,’ a combination of a single lorry pulling two standard trailers, considered the largest road transport solution in Europe. It is 31.75 metres long and has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions between 25% and 30% per trip, compared to the same load transported in traditional lorries.

Eugenio Vila, Purchasing Logistics South Europe at Henkel, comments: “Being part of this project is a great step towards logistics collaboration for our business. The duo-trailer enables us to reduce carbon emissions while transporting twice the load on a lorry than any other conventional method, so this solution further optimises our transport routes.”

Through this collaboration, Henkel and CAPSA FOOD will share the duo-trailer on three routes per week for shipments and deliveries made between Madrid and Catalonia. With a capacity for 66 European base pallets and 48 tonne, the duo-trailer can reduce up to 250,000 empty kilometres per year, which means approximately 115 tons less CO2 emitted into the atmosphere.

Adrián Fariña, CAPSA’s Head of Transport, says: “Developing a culture of collaboration within consumer goods companies is key in a world divided between ever-increasing demand and the imperative to reduce our environmental footprint, which has never been as essential as it is now.”

CHEP’s Collaborative Transport Solutions are part of its Zero Waste World (ZWW) programme, a collaborative project that brings together leading distributors and manufacturers to create smarter and more sustainable supply chains. In addition to eradicating empty transport miles, ZWW also focuses on eliminating waste and eradicating supply chain inefficiencies through digitisation.

Michael Gierloff, CHEP Europe’s Director of Transport, explains: “We are delighted with the promising results that the duo-trailer project is delivering. Our goal is to expand circular supply chains throughout our products, solutions and customer collaborations and we are committed to expanding our collaborative projects to more partners around the world. Therefore, last year we launched AirShared, an online community that brings together CHEP’s top consumer goods customers and is focused on fostering existing and new transport collaboration projects.”
